The music we play, chamber music for small ensembles, was never originally intended for the concert hall. Its original audience was smaller groups of people gathered in private homes. We have been considering ways of bringing live music back into everyday life. The front porch was the space between street busking and in-house concerts.
Our first experiment with the front porch as a live music venue will be on June 3, 2017, at 4 pm, as part of MakeSomethingEdmonton’s 100 in 1 day event. We invite people to sit on the grass or bring a lawn chair and enjoy a short concert on our own front porch, 8937 – 79 Ave. NW, Edmonton
If this event is successful, we will do more, and possibly involve more people. We have a vision of connecting many homeowners with front porches who would like to host a concert, with many musicians who are interested in doing performances, and having live music on front porches all over the city during the summer months. If you are interested in being part of such a project, contact us at email@example.com.
Update: We were pleased to notice that the Kaleido Festival has also embraced the “Front Porch Concert” idea, hosting several small performances in front yards in the festival neighbourhood during September. But Ithaca, New York, has been hosting a “Porchfest” since 2007!
